A race has three jobs in a row: rev the engine, leave the starting line, then shift. When the race ends, a results screen called the timeslip pops up. That screen is how you see whether the light or the car was the problem.
Rev and aim
At the start, tap and hold the pedal in the middle of the screen, then drag it down. Watch the tachometer on the left. That is the dial that shows engine RPM. Drag until the needle is in the green zone. While you hold, move your finger left and right until the arrow pointing forward from your car is straight and green. A yellow or red arrow means the car will swerve when it leaves.
Leave the starting line
The starting lights are the Christmas Tree, on the starting line. They go from yellow to green. Do not wait until green is fully on. Lift off the pedal as the last yellow is going out. The car takes a split second to start moving, so that early lift is what a good reaction time looks like. Lift too early and you get a red light and lose the run. See How to Get a Good Reaction Time.
Shift
Tap anywhere on the screen to shift. Watch the tachometer and the arrow on the left. You accelerate best when you shift while that arrow is in the green zone. Different cars need a different number of shifts, and the green window can be wider or narrower. Handling is the stat that widens that window.
